STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Ford is recalling more than 870,000 F-150 vehicles due to a parking brake issue, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Ford is recalling certain 2021-2023 F-150 vehicles equipped with a single exhaust system. Contact with the rear axle housing may damage the wiring harness, causing the electric parking brake to activate unexpectedly. The unexpected activation of the electric parking brake while driving increases the risk of a crash.
“Damaged electric parking brake wiring may lead to inadvertent parking brake application while driving, potentially resulting in loss of control of the vehicle and increasing the risk of a crash,” according to the NHTSA documents.
The driver may see a parking brake warning light and message on the instrument panel cluster.
As of July 11, Ford is aware of 918 warranty and three field reports for the wire chafing condition in North America, received within the range of August 2021 and July 2023. Of these reports, 299 indicated that the electric parking brake had unintended activation, of which 19 allege electric parking brake application while driving.
Ford is not aware of any reports of accident or injury related to this condition, the NHTSA documents state.
Dealers will install a protective tie strap, tape wrap, and replace the harness as necessary, free of charge. Owners will be notified via letter starting Sept. 11. Owners can also contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford’s number for this recall is 23S35.
Earlier this month, Toyota recalled 110,000 vehicles for airbags that may not deploy. Toyota is recalling certain 2023 Corolla, Corolla Cross, Corolla Cross Hybrid, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, Tacoma, 2023 Lexus RX350, RX350 Hybrid, RX500 Hybrid, 2023-2024 Lexus NX250, NX350 and NX350 Hybrid vehicles.
An electrical connection inside the steering column’s spiral cable assembly may be insufficiently welded, causing the connection to separate and deactivate the driver’s airbag. If this occurs, the airbag warning light will illuminate and the deactivated driver’s airbag may not deploy as intended — increasing the risk of injury to the driver during a crash.
DO YOU HAVE A RECALL ON YOUR VEHICLE?
Wondering if your car has any open recalls?
You can easily check it out by visiting the NHTSA’s website and plugging in your vehicle identification number (VIN).
The service also reports recalls to tires, children’s car seats and other equipment.
If you plug in your car’s VIN and a recall does not appear, your vehicle most likely has no open recalls. The exception would be if a new recall hasn’t yet posted.
